A Name Giving Ceremony

Naming Ceremonies are increasingly popular. Also referred to as Namegivings, they are a secular ceremony, and the occasion at which the parents choose to formally introduce their child to their family and circle of friends, and announce the chosen names.Today, many parents choose not to baptise their children, because they have no active involvement with a Church, or have non-religious beliefs. Other parents are practising Christians, but feel that children should make their own decision about embracing the family religious faith when old enough to understand the commitment. Other parents choose to have both a religious ceremony and a Naming ceremony as well. Not to have a ceremony however would be to miss out on what is a very significant event in family life - the arrival of a new family member.

Parents elect to have a Naming Ceremony to share the occasion with family and friends at what is usually an informal though still very important and delightful occasion.

As well as giving the child his or her name, this ceremony also incorporates godparents (mentors or sponsors) promising to take a special interest in this child. Some children are named shortly after birth, but the first birthday is a popular time for others. Sometimes, other children in the family will be named at the same time

"Hi Elaine,
Thank you so much for the ceremony, many people said it was the best one they had ever attended.
Regards,
Clare"

"Many thanks to you Elaine for the wonderful naming ceremony you put together for our son Archie.Your examples of readings and poems were very helpful and your creative ideas made the ceremony one to remember. We especially loved the bowl of wishes idea and Archie will cherish these special wishes in the years tocome.Karen Orr"

  1. I have to go to a naming ceremony in November 2011 this year. I will be curious to see what rituals and inclusions the celebrant puts into the naming ceremony. I hope it is involving, upbeat and flows nicely. babies are gorgeous and all they have to do is make sound or an expression and the Grandparents etc are at their mercy.
